(규칙1) 한 개의 모음소리로 이루어진 단어는 나누지 않는다.

        (Do not divide a word with one vowel sound.)

        예) cat, fish, slow, jump

(규칙2) 복합단어는 각각 simple form 이 되도록 그 사이를 나눈다.

        (Divide a compound word between two simple forms.)

        예) sea/horse,  rain/coat, tooth/brush, dog/house

(규칙3) 접두어와 simple form 으로 구성된 단어는 그 사이를 나눈다.

        (Divide a word between the prefix and the simple form.)

        예) un/tie, re/do, dis/please, mis/spell

(규칙4) simple form 과 접미어로 구성된 단어는 그 사이를 나눈다.

        (Divide a word between the simple form and the suffix.)

        예) thank/ful, sad/ness, use/less, loud/ly

(규칙5) 두 모음소리 사이에 하나의 자음이 있을 경우에는 그 자음 앞에서 그 단어를 나눈다.

(When you see a consonant between two vowel sounds, divide the word

            before the consonant.)

        예) fau/cet, pa/per, stu/dent, spi/der

(규칙6) 두 모음 소리 사이에 두개의 자음이 있을 때, 그 단어를 두 자음 사이에서 나눈다.

        (When you see two consonants between two vowel sounds, divide the word

       between the two consonants.)

        예) bal/loon, mon/key, prin/cess, zip/per

(규칙7) 자음이 digraph로 이루어져 있을 때는 그 자음들을 나누지(분리) 말라.

        (Do not separate the two letters in a consonant diagraph.)

        예) fea/ther, teach/er, te/le/phone, brush/ing

(규칙8) 만약 단어가 자음+le 로 끝나면, 그 자음 앞에서 단어를 나누어라.

        (If a word ends in a consonant + le, divide the word before the consonant.)

        예) ap/ple, tur/tle, mar/ble, jug/gle

(규칙9) 단어 안에서 하나의 모음이 자체적으로 떨어질 때, 그 모음은 하나의 음절이다.

        (When a vowel is by itself in a word, it is a syllable.)

        예) o/boe, o/pen, a/wake, a/larm

(규칙10) 붙어 있는 두개의 모음이 각각 다른 소리를 낼 때, 그 모음 사이를 나눈다.

        (When two vowels that are next to each other make different sounds, divide

         the word between the vowels.)

        예) pi/a/no, tri/an/gle, li/on, gi/ant
